Airdrie and Shotts MP Welcomes 'World-Leading' Programme for Government
The SNP’s Anum Qaisar-Javed MP has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government.
Among the headline announcements from the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, was a commitment to double the Scottish Child Payment to £20 per week, while the Scottish Government will also explore a Minimum Income Guarantee.
The Scottish Government also plans to introduce twelve new Bills over the coming year, including legislation around the COVID recovery, establishment of a National Care Service and becoming a ‘Good Food Nation’.
Ms Qaisar-Javed said:
“We’re looking at a plan for Government that is ambitious, world-leading and deliver real change for so many across Scotland and my constituency of Airdrie and Shotts.
“While the Tories are planning to raise National Insurance contributions and deliver a devastating cut of £20 per week to Universal Credit, the SNP is showing real leadership at Holyrood. In that context of continued Westminster austerity, innovative policies like the Minimum Income Guarantee will be all the more important in protecting people and families from falling into poverty.
“The contrast between Westminster and Holyrood could not be more stark than it is today. A Tory-Government more obsessed with the colour of your passport than whether you can feed your kids; or an SNP-led Government investing in health, education, wraparound childcare. There’s no better example of why Scotland must become an independent country.”
